I am a frugal person at heart and that mostly came from my upbringing. Growing up, my sister and I would find delight in sorting through hand me down clothes from family friends. One year, my mom bought five pairs of the same tennis shoes from Payless for me because they were on sale for $2. Much to my dismay, I had to wear the apparent same pair of tennis shoes to school for the next four years.
When it comes to personal style, I believe that it is worth it to splurge on certain items if those items are either better quality, more comfortable, better style, or if they simply make you happy. Bear in mind that in talking about splurge items, I don’t just mean items that are ridiculously expensive. For me, a splurge item is something that may cost more than other similar items, but that in my opinion the extra cost is worth it because of the amount of use I will get out of the item. What you decide to splurge on really depends on your personal taste and lifestyle. Before I purchase a splurge item, I always try to find a less expensive alternative.
Below are some of the splurge items that I have used the most for both work and play. Keep in mind that one person’s splurge is another person’s steal.
1. Tory Burch Sally wedges
I have four pairs of these wedges in various colors and styles for work, not because I’m a Tory Burch hoarder, but because these wedges are so comfortable and provide a little bit of extra height. There is no break in period for me. I’m constantly on my feet at work so it is important that my shoes are comfortable. I get compliments all the time from women and men alike.
2. Prada Saffiano Lux Double Zip purse
This is a durable leather bag in a classic shape. It fits my iPad and a whole bunch of other things. It’s classy looking without being too flashy. Tory Burch makes an almost identical version.
3. Burburry quilted black jacket
I live in California and this light weight jacket is perfect for those chillier mornings and evenings. It’s shapely and versatile.
4. Diamond stud earrings
This was a gift from my mom for my 30th birthday. I wear them almost every day because they are simple and elegant, whether I’m in jeans and a tee shirt or a work dress.
5. Raymond Weil Jasmine watch
This was a graduation gift I bought for myself. Prior to this watch, I always wore Guess and Skagen watches so this was a big step up. To be truthful, I actually had my heart set on a Cartier or Chopard but I was priced out of the market.
I wear these items on heavy rotation with my “work uniform” and have been very happy with the quality and style. What are your favorite splurges?
