I once heard a jeweler say that there is no point in getting high quality diamonds or gem stones if you’re not going to keep them clean and looking their best. For years, I used to bring my jewelry into the store to get them professionally cleaned and the pieces always came back looking amazing (of course the special jewelry store lighting didn’t hurt either).
Now that I’m a busy mom, I simply don’t have the time to run extra errands. A few years ago, my sister recommended using an ultrasonic cleaner. She was recently engaged at that time and did a lot of research on how to keep her engagement ring sparkling clean. I’m not sure why it took me so long to jump onto the ultrasonic jewelry cleaner bandwagon, but boy is it quick and easy to use! I bought this Magnasonic ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and use the Blitz gem and jewelry solution for my diamond ring, necklaces, earrings, etc. Make sure to read the label carefully and do not use this for pearls or silver jewelry.
The ultrasonic machine is big enough to clean your glasses and watches as well. For those things, I just put a couple drops of dish soap instead of the Blitz solution.
6 Easy steps to cleaning your jewelry:
- Plug up your sink so you don’t lose anything down the drain.
- Fill up your ultrasonic cleaner with warm water.
- Add one cap full of the Blitz solution.
- Place your jewelry in the basket, making sure that your diamonds don’t touch other diamonds or gem stones (diamonds can scratch).
- Run for 180 seconds (longer if the jewelry is extra dirty or use a soft toothbrush to get into the crevices).
- Rinse well with water afterwards and gently dab dry with a soft cloth.
It’s important to store your diamond jewelry away from other jewelry in a fabric-lined box to prevent accidental scratching. I hemmed and hawed over buying this Wolf Chloe jewelry box but am glad that I did. There are a few versions of this style and I purchased the medium size because it also came with a removable travel case. I found a better deal on the same thing here. Overall, I was very impressed with the beauty and quality of the jewelry box and it should last a very long time.
How do you clean and store your jewelry? Are there any fun pieces you are coveting?
