Summer Travel: Tips for saving money on your flights

Summer travel tips for saving money on your flight

If you’re looking forward to some vacation time, now is a good time to start planning.  Here are some tips for finding good deals on flights:

1. Avoid holiday travel

This one is obvious.  More people travel around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and the summer months, so there are fewer deals.

2. Don’t wait until the last minute to book

It’s generally best to book 2-3 months in advance to get the best price on domestic flights.  I have heard of people getting great last minute deals but I have not personally had such luck.  My experience is that the closer you get to the travel date, the more expensive the tickets.

3. Be flexible with your travel date and location

Most people plan their vacations by first figuring out when and where they would like to travel.  This usually results in less than economical flight prices.  If you can be flexible with your travel date and location, you can score some really cheap flight tickets.  I found this article to be very helpful.

4. Fly out of less popular airports

Sometimes just choosing a different airport to fly out of can save you hundreds of dollars.  For example, in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can choose to fly out of San Francisco, Oakland, or even Concord.  The cost to fly out of these airports can vary drastically.

5. Sign up for Airline credit cards to earn miles

My brother-in-law is a big advocate of redeeming his credit card points for airline miles.  He often travels for free or almost free.

6. Sign up for email notifications from your favorite airline

If you have a favorite airline, sign up for their email alerts to let you know about their best deals.   For example, Norwegian Airline has a deal right now where you can fly non-stop from Oakland to Stockholm or Seattle to London for $169 each way!

7. Use Google Flight

Google Flight is an easy way to help you quickly find the best prices on flights.  Be sure to check Southwest pricing separately, as they are not included in the comparison.  You can also use the tracker tool to check and see if prices go up or down.
